Kingston Cyclist Leaves Opponents in Dust at 2006 Ontario Summer Games

Jordan Hulme, riding on a borrowed bike, led the Kingston BMX Club to a medal sweep in the boys 16 and over category Thursday in BMX cycling as competition got underway at the 19th Ontario Summer Games.

BMX cycling is an action-packed sport based on motorcycle cross racing with riders competing head-on on a dirt track packed with bumps, hills and sharp turns. BMX is slated to make its Olympic debut at the Beijing Games in two years, and if the Ontario Games are any indication there’s no shortage of talent and interest in Canada.

Day 4 of the Games on Saturday, August 12, the last day of the Ottawa 2006 Ontario Summer Games, will see medals awarded in most of the sports on the Games program. Only those sports that had their competitions conclude on either Thursday or Friday will be exempt from the "Medal Madness" on Saturday. When all is said and done, over 500 sets of Gold, Silver and Bronze Games medals will have been presented to the deserving winners.

The Ottawa 2006 Ontario Summer Games Organizing Committee has also organized a Closing BBQ for all the Games participants once their competitions are over on Saturday. From 3:00pm to 7:00pm on Saturday afternoon and early evening, Games participants are encouraged to come to the Fieldhouse and Keith Harris Stadium area at Carleton University to enjoy an informal BBQ and relive their Games experience with members of their families, the Games Organizing Committee and fellow Games participants. This will also be the last chance to purchase Games merchandise and photos, and collect/trade Games memorabilia. Hope to see you all there!

Following the Closing BBQ, the Games Organizing Committee will be holding their Volunteer Appreciation Party at the same venue from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.

Sports Competitions and MuchMusic Video Dance Party To Highlight Day 2 Action at the Games

After the thrill of the Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday night, August 9, Day 2 of the Ottawa 2006 Ontario Summer Games on Thursday, August 10 will see all 20 sports begin their competitions at over 30 venues across the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Region. Of particular interest, will be the evening competitions planned for the sports of Basketball (at Carleton University and Ridgemont High School), Boys Baseball (at Carl Faulkner Field, Hamilton Yards, and Heritage Park), Girls Baseball (at Kinsmen Fields, Walter Baker Park), Field Hockey (at Minto Field, Nepean Sportsplex), Box Lacrosse (at Earl Armstrong and Merivale Arenas), and Volleyball (at the University of Ottawa). This is the first time that a Games Organizing Committee has taken the initiative to profile so many of the Games sports in the evening so that the general public has more of an opportunity to come out and see Canada's future national and international athletes.

After the full day of competition on Day 2, the Games participants will be treated to a MuchMusic Video Dance Party at the Carleton University Fieldhouse from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. The MuchMusic name is known in every corner of the province and their mobile sound, lighting and video projection systems are designed to create exciting "live musictelevision" just like you see it on TV, except a lot louder and brighter. MuchMusic's "party veejays" will interact with our Games participants audience creating "two-way television" to get the audience pumped up and into the act. There will also be lots of MuchMusic giveaways at the Party.

Day 1 of the Games Only a Week Away

Even though yesterday saw Ottawa suffer through a day where temperatures reached 36 degrees with a humidex of 48 degrees, the weather forecast for Day 1 of the Games next Wednesday, August 9 is much more moderate. Current projections call for a sunny day with temperatures in the low to mid 20's. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Historically, the Ontario Summer Games program has had Opening Ceremonies on the Thursday night of the Games after a full day of competition. Due to the unpredictable nature of sport competitions, this has led in recent years to the unfortunate circumstance where some Games Participants have missed Opening Ceremonies due to their sport competitions running later than expected. To ensure that all Games Partcipants could be part of and enjoy the experience of the Opening Ceremonies at the Ottawa 2006 Ontario Summer Games, the Games Organizing Committee revised the Games program schedule to hold the Opening Ceremonies on the Wednesday night of the Games program without any other conflicting events. As a result, it is expected that all Games participants will be at Lynx Stadium on Wednesday, August 9 to enjoy all the festivities that are planned for the evening.
