Strathroy Paddler and Thornhill Water Skier Shine at Ontario Summer Games

Jaymi Fairbairn of Thornhill, Ont., swept all three gold in the women’s open division in water skiing while Carlyn Johnston of Strathroy hung a third and fourth gold around her paddle on Thursday at the 2006 Ontario Summer Games.

The Games, which run until Saturday have attracted 2,500 athletes competing in 20 sports.

MARATHON CANOE

In marathon canoe competition, Carlyn Johnston and  Kier Johnston of Strathroy, won the mixed marathon canoe double competition in 41 minutes and 30 seconds.  Melanie Baker of Strathroy and Aiden Gibson of Ottawa were second in 44:47 and Robyn Perritt of Peterborough and Peter Suke of Tobermory third in 45:15.

In the marathon North canoe race, Carlyn Johnston, Kier Johnston, Baker, Suke, Cameron Walker of London and Alexandru Borogin of London combined forces for the gold in 16:27.  Julie Henry of Brantford, Monica Tait of Ingersoll, Aiden Gibson of Ottawa, Nik Krausbar of Ottawa, Alex Baltat of London, Conrad Antone of Southwold and Braedy Walker of London were second in 17:52.  Megan Locke, Lauren Grant, Kate Whitnell, Jesse Crisi, Andrew Locke and Matt Jessup, all of Milton, and Christian Fuller of London were third in 18:19.

Carlyn Johnston ends the marathon canoe competition with four gold medals. She also won the women’s C-1 and C-2 marathon races on Thursday.

WATER SKIING

It was a busy day in water skiing. In open girls competition, Jaymi Fairbairn of Thornhill swept gold in all three events. She was first in slalom with Emily Cormier of Hampton second and Ashley Banks of Whitby third.  In tricks, Fairbairn prevailed again with Banks second and Rebecca Jones of Beeton third.  Fairbairn notched a third gold in open wakeboard with Banks second and Jones third.

In intermediate boys competition, Paul Fairbairn of Thornhill won the gold medal in slalom with Jonah Shaffer second and David Fairbairn of Thornhill third.  In wakeboard Michael Fairbairn of Thornhill was the winner with David Fairbairn second and Andrew McKenzie third.

In open boys division,  Michael Fairbain was first in slalom followed by Jaret Bull of North Bay and Billy McKenzie in third.  In tricks, Bull took the gold this time with David Fairbairn second and Michael Fairbairn third.  In wakeboard, Kory Davis was the winner with Paul Fairbairn second and Bruce McKenzie third.

In intermediate girls slalom, Rebecca Jones of Beeton, Ont.,  took the gold ahead of Rebecca Shaffer in second and Erica Olmstead.

In junior girls slalom, Danielle Shiriff of Barrie was the winner ahead of Katherine Shiriff of Barrie in second and Jaimee Bull of North Bay in third.

Competition ends Saturday featuring medal games in all the team sports.
